How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs After Waxing | Scottsdale, AZ
If you’ve ever dealt with an ingrown hair after waxing, you know how frustrating they can be.
The good news?
Ingrown hairs aren’t inevitable. With the right aftercare routine, you can dramatically reduce your chances of developing them and keep your skin smoother between appointments.
What causes ingrown hairs?
An ingrown hair happens when a new hair gets trapped beneath the surface of the skin instead of growing out normally.
This can happen because:
Dead skin blocks the hair follicle.
Hair curls back into the skin.
Tight clothing creates friction.
Skin becomes irritated after hair removal.
Even people who wax regularly can get the occasional ingrown hair, but consistent aftercare makes a big difference.
1. Wait before exfoliating
One of the biggest mistakes people make is exfoliating too soon after a wax.
Your skin needs time to calm down.
I recommend waiting 48 hours before gently exfoliating the area. This gives your follicles time to close and reduces unnecessary irritation.
2. Exfoliate 2–3 times per week
Once your skin has recovered, regular exfoliation becomes your best defense against ingrown hairs.
You can use:
A soft exfoliating mitt
A gentle body scrub
A chemical exfoliant containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid
The goal isn’t to scrub aggressively—it’s simply to remove dead skin so new hairs can grow through normally.
3. Keep your skin moisturized
Healthy, hydrated skin makes it easier for hair to grow through the surface.
Use a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer daily to keep the skin soft and reduce irritation.
4. Wear loose clothing after your appointment
For the first day or two after waxing, tight leggings, underwear, or jeans can create extra friction around freshly waxed follicles.
If possible, wear loose, breathable clothing for the rest of the day after your appointment.
5. Don’t pick at ingrown hairs
It’s tempting.
But squeezing or digging at an ingrown hair can make things worse and may even cause infection or scarring.
Instead:
Apply a warm compress.
Continue gentle exfoliation.
Let the hair naturally work its way to the surface.
If an ingrown becomes painful, swollen, or doesn’t improve, it’s a good idea to have it evaluated by a medical professional.
Does waxing cause more ingrown hairs than shaving?
Not necessarily.
Many clients actually experience fewer ingrown hairs after switching from shaving to regular waxing.
Because waxing removes hair from the root, consistent appointments often lead to finer, softer regrowth that’s less likely to become trapped beneath the skin. The key is following a consistent waxing schedule and good aftercare.
My favorite tip for preventing ingrown hairs
If I could give every client just one piece of advice, it would be this:
Don’t skip exfoliation.
Waiting 48 hours after your wax and then exfoliating gently a few times each week is one of the simplest ways to keep your skin smoother and help prevent trapped hairs before they become a problem.
