How Long Should Your Hair Be Before a Brazilian Wax? | Scottsdale, AZ

One of the questions I get asked most is:

“Should I shave before my appointment?”

The answer is simple:

No. Please don’t shave.

For the best results, your hair should be about ¼ inch long, or roughly the length of a grain of rice. This gives the wax enough hair to grip so it can remove it cleanly from the root.

Why does hair length matter?

Wax works by wrapping around each hair and pulling it from the root.

If your hair is:

  • Too short: the wax may not grab every hair.

  • Too long: the appointment can be slightly more uncomfortable, and hairs are more likely to break instead of pulling cleanly from the root.

The sweet spot is around ¼ inch.

How long should I wait after shaving?

If you’ve been shaving regularly, I recommend waiting about 2–3 weeks before your first Brazilian wax.

Everyone’s hair grows differently, but this usually gives enough growth for the wax to work properly.

What if my hair is too long?

Don’t stress.

If your hair has grown much longer than ½ inch, I’ll simply trim it before waxing if needed.

There’s no need to try giving yourself a perfect haircut beforehand. I’d rather do a quick trim than have you accidentally shave too much.

Should I trim before my appointment?

Usually, no.

If you’re unsure whether your hair is too long, just leave it alone.

It’s much easier for me to trim hair that’s slightly too long than it is to wax hair that’s too short.

What if I accidentally shaved?

It happens!

If you shaved a few days ago, it’s usually best to reschedule rather than wax hair that’s too short.

Waiting another week or so often leads to a much smoother result with less discomfort.

Can hair be too short to wax?

Yes.

When hair is too short, the wax can’t grip it well enough to remove it from the root.

That can leave behind patches of hair and may require multiple passes, which can be more irritating for your skin.

Tips before your appointment

To get the best results:

  • Let your hair grow to about ¼ inch.

  • Avoid shaving between appointments.

  • Gently exfoliate 24–48 hours beforehand.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing after your appointment.
